Welcome back to the sometimes monthly blog.  Always so much to do here at the nursery but will try to do better about keeping up with it on a more regular basis.  So here we are, another hot, dry month to get through.  Surely the end is in sight as we head towards September and the start of the fall gardening season?

There is still time to plant the last of the spring/summer crops like beans, cucumbers, okra, peppers, squash and tomatoes.  Only a couple of more weeks to take advantage of these items before the cool season crops start to arrive.  We are starting to seed out broccoli, cabbage, leafy greens like kale and Swiss chard to kick off the fall season in early September followed by Asian greens, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, rhubarb and strawberries.

Summer has been difficult for propagating many of the herbs but look for a new round of mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme later this month.  We are also seeding out dill, fennel, parsley in our cooler to get them to germinate.  There is one plant that loves this heat and that’s basil.  Time to harvest the spring crop and make pesto to freeze for winter use and to plant a final crop before cold weather arrives.

Looking for fall color?  We have Beautyberry, Coral Vine (Queen Ann’s Lace), Fall Aster, Mexican Mint Marigold, Forsythia Sage, and other Salvias and much more in production.  Be sure to watch the weekly availability list for them to appear.  I leave you now with some summer sizzlers that have braved this heat spell and shown their resilience.

Until next month: Gardening adds years to your life and life to your years.
