Happy Winter Solstice!  December 21st marks the shortest day of the year (the least amount of daylight) and the beginning of winter.  For once, we experienced a normal fall season; at least as close as you can get in Texas.  A bit short on rain but the fall color was the best I have ever seen, especially considering the impact summer had on our beloved trees.  As we wrap up the year with holiday gatherings and celebrations the garden takes a break.  But not for long.  Now is a good time to weed, clean up and refresh the soil with compost.  If your lettuce is looking a bit ragged you can cut it back to about 1” and it will put on new leaves for a continued harvest.  Cold weather is bound to show up sooner than later so cut and dry some of your herbs, like dill, mint, oregano, thyme and store in airtight jars.  This would make a great handmade gift for someone.  Include a recipe and some fresh sprigs of herbs for a truly festive gift.

From all of us here at Gabriel Valley Farms we wish everyone peace, joy and success in the coming year.
