January 2024
Happy New Year!
Hope everyone had a great holiday and are ready to dive into 2024. As I write this, the temperature has warmed up to 18 degrees. Slight freezing precipitation in spots around the nursery. Luckily no power outages. The heaters are cranked up, plants in unheated houses are under their frost blankets and faucets are dripping. So far, so good. Hope you took precautions with your plants and brought tender potted plants inside and wrapped and covered plants in your landscape. Always a good idea to have plenty of frost blankets on hand. A thick layer of hay will help insulate plants too but avoid covering with plastic. It cuts off air circulation and if the sun is out it can burn the leaves on plants or freeze the leaves that are touching the plastic.
Despite the current cold weather (and likely not the last we will see) we are busy seeding peppers & tomatoes! Also, continuing with a fresh round of broccoli, cabbage, kale, lettuce, spinach and Swiss chard. There is plenty of time to grow one more round of cool weather crops before the weather is safe to plant cucumbers, eggplant, melons, squash and of course peppers & tomatoes.
2024 marks our 35th year in business. We appreciate the support from all of our customers over the years and are especially thankful to our employees who work hard to seed, plant, grow, water, deliver and keep it all running. We are proud of our Certified Organic status and the demand for our plants motivates us to work hard to keep the dream alive. Thank you!
